Review of 76205 Gargantos Showdown

“Shuma-Gorath?”

First of all, a big thank you to LEGO for sending us this awesome set for review. Shuma-Gorath is an ancient force of chaos, the immortal, nigh-invincible, and godlike ruler of nearly a hundred alternate universes, capable of energy projection, shapeshifting, teleportation, levitation, altering reality, and sympathetic magic. In Marvel movies or series, he often arrives from portals. For example in Episode 1 of What If, it tried to enter our world via a portal created by the Tessaract and got pushed back by Captain Carter. I think in this set, he might be brought in via a portal created by America Chavez? Will this monster be actually Shuma-Gorath or just Gargantos as the set name indicates? Let’s find out when the movie hits us next year.
This set is priced at USD29.99 with a part count of 264 pieces alongside 3 Minifigures with a release date of 1 Jan 2021 to tie in with the new Dr. Strange movie : the Multiverse of Madness.

Boxart

The front of the box shows Dr. Strange, Wong and America Chavez fighting the Gargantos. The background art shows that the fight might take place in the mirror dimension that Dr. Strange created. Actress Xochitl Gomez is prominently shown at the right side of the box, a new addition to the MCU.

The back of the box shows the fight at a Zebra crossing. Let’s hope that The Beatles are not crossing the road while they fight 😉 . One interesting point to notice is the Scarlet Witch minifigure at the top right corner of the box is the version that appeared in the Marvel CMF series. So it’s likely that she’ll make an appearance in this fight too as heavily rumoured in the MCU fandom

There are no stickers in this set. These are pretty interesting parts (from L-R)

6303514- Rainbow flag printed 1×1 round tile

6386220- This Transparent yellow will be part of the eye for Gargantos. While building the eye, you might find that the assembly of a 2×2 round tile that will be built into the center of the trans yellow part cannot be removed easily, even with brick separator. I found that a good way to disassemble it will be via the four empty holes near the center of the transparent yellow part. Using a blunt long thin instrument like a pencap, push the red tile out of it through the holes from the back and it will come out easily. DON’T use with anything sharp to pry the red tile. You will damage the parts.

6376666- The pupil and Iris of the eye.

These three parts are totally new and still not found in Bricklink.

The Build

The build of the head, eye and the eyebrows of the creature. So he is just a blob of sand green block with tentacles. I love the eye and how the eyebrow is attached to the block. It doesn’t seem to have eyelid but the eyebrow clips seamlessly with the body of the eye.

The back of the blob seems boring but the details and textures are not missing.

Now let’s attach the tentacles!

This is the projected tentacles right below the one eye. Maybe these smaller tentacles will help him feed?

Tada! The finished build. Now he looks more menacing and majestic standing on the four tentacles. The four tentacles provides a very stable posture for him. (A clearer picture of how Gargantos stands will be at the end of this article so let’s continue.)
There is no little build included in this set as was the norm for most sets of this size so it’s just Gargantos and the minifigures.

Minifigures

America Chavez. She is wearing a sand blue jacket with a star decoration at the back of the torso. I’m not sure how her power works in the movie but judging from the rainbow tiles she is holding, I suppose she will open portals with that?

Wong. He has a new robe in red and purple while holding Wanda’s old power dishes. The prints are great on his torso and legs reminded me of Ninjago minifigures. He doesn’t have alternate face here which is peculiar as the hairpiece used allows for it. Perhaps they found out Wong in this movie had more hair than was expected a bit too late in the development process?

New(left) and old(right) Wong variants. I suppose he grew his hair out over the years and decided to shave.

Doctor Strange. The main character in the set. This minifigure is amazing with the rubber cape! This one is definitely an exclusive minifigure as he has moved the eye of Agamotto from a necklace more towards a sort of brooch/clasp. He comes with two facial expressions, one angry, and one with a grin.

A comparison of Dr Stranges’ from old to new. The hairstyle have changed twice and the latest hair changed from white to grey. Time stone is no more visible in the latest one. Cape evolved to rubber and notice the beard, the colour also changed from white to grey, but why the power dishes downgraded from magical rune prints to trans orange ones with no printing? Missing here is the Dr. Strange from the No Way Home set tie-in, 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop which would slot into the third spot in this line-up

Here’s that particular version from the the official images of set 76185. Dr Strange is already without the Time Stone but his necklace is still long. I wonder what event makes the necklace short in the Multiverse of Madness? Will we be getting Dr Strange VARIANTS in the movie?

Rubber caped dudes! Here the grey hair can be better appreciated. Unlike batman, Dr Strange’s rubber cape can be clasped on any minifigure with the flexibility of the rubber. However Batman’s cowl is firmly attached to the rubber cape makes it exclusive to batman only.

Room of Variants! Before this, we could only see tentacles starting to appear from a portal in the first Dr. Strange LEGO set 76060 : Dr. Strange Sanctum Sanctorum, but now we can see a full creature thanks to the Multiverse of Madness. I think this new set is a very nice complement to the old Dr Strange set 76060. Could the red monster be Shuma Gorath and differs from the Gargantos we see in this new set??

As promised. Here you can see how stable it is standing on its four ‘feet’ tentacles. We are teasing our next review of the new “UCS” brick built Iron-Man Mark 43.

Verdict

I give this set a 4.9/5.0 score as the design of the Shuma-Gorath is very nice with the tentacles flowing. This set is priced at USD29.99 with a parts count of 264 pieces alongside 3 Minifigures. The minifigures are all exclusive ones with detailed printings.  I think this set really is a must get if you have the old 76060.

They are available in the stores starting 1st day of January 2022!

Hope you enjoyed my review. Thank you!
