Review of 80018 Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike

“Delorean Bike.”

This set features one larger Monkie Kid bike and a slimmer purple Spindrax’s bike. This set is priced at USD24.99 with a parts count of 203 pieces alongside with 3 Minifigures. Let’s see what’s inside this set.

The front of the box features a red futuristic styled bike which has the hovering function racing a baddie’s bike trying to stop it from attacking an innocent civilian named Rui.

The back of the box shows us the play features of the set. One interesting feature is you can turn the wheels sideways to make it hover like the Delorean in Back to the future. There are two disc shooters at each side of the bike and this can be triggered by the orange ball lever at the back of the bike.

Minifigures
Monkie Kid.

Rui. She is quite a normal city minifigure but one thing special about her is she has an attachment for a spider to cling on her back to attack her. Hence the startled face.

Spindrax. An exclusive to this set villain in this wave. He has a very scary looking face with two extra eyes on his forehead. I love the spider bikers jacket in purple and the legs are well printed too. Overall he looks like a biker. His helmet is the endgame antman’s helmet mold and it looks quite good on him in black and spider themed prints.

The spider bike. I love the purple colour scheme coupled with the trans light green venomous bullets here. However the bike is quite simple and can be found easily in Ninjago sets.

Top view of the bike reveals the Technic parts at both side of the bike connecting the front and back wheels.

6328510 Technic Wedge Belt Wheel (Pulley) Trans Orange
6327080 Technic Wedge Belt Wheel (Pulley) Dark Turquoise
These parts have been used for a very long time. They existed since 1980 but dark turquoise is a new recolour of the wheel in 2021.

Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike. It is well designed for the name, cloud and bike. I love that the designers used the new cloud element at the exhaust to represent the smoke that is emitted from the tailpipe. Here you can also see the disc shooter and it is symmetrical at the other side of the bike.

Top view of the bike while it is in hovering mode. There are no mechanisms inside the bike so you need to manually turn the wheels one at a time.

The Cloud bike is ready to take off!

The “spider” included in this set. I thought spiders have 8 legs? However this is the basic design of the spider drones in this wave. Here are all the spiders included in this wave.

A comparison of the spider drones in this wave.
Top row from the left is from 80023, 80022, 80021 respectively
Bottom row from the left is from 80020, 80018, 80023 respectively

Bikers, assemble! Poor Rui has been captured by the spider drone.

The 6 Monkie Kids that we get from this wave. All come with the staff except for the Monkie Kid from the Flower Fruit Mountain. From L-R : 80024, 80023, 80021, 80022, 80018 and 80019. They are all very similar with slightly different facial expressions. So you will get six identical hairpieces and legs, 5 identical torso and one special torso from 80019, 5 dark turquoise hoodies and 1 pair of headphones, and 10 different facial expressions.

The alternate faces of the Monkie Kids.

One special extra that I spotted in this wave was the dress pieces of the Spider Queen. Her skirt is not really new having been introduced a few years back which not only standardizes the height of the minifigures but also introduces is a slight taper towards the top. This little change that LEGO did was very subtle to accommodate the hands while they are to be placed at the same level with the torso. Zoom in and have a look at the right arm of the Statue of the Liberty. There is a gap in between the arm and the torso indicating that the squeeze of the arm towards the old skirt creates stress on the shoulder of the minifigure.

From the right: old slope, new skirt and 6 1×2 plates stacked together. Here you can see the old slope is perfectly parallel with the 6 stacked plates with no allocation of space for the hands as they only repurposed the slope with a print. However the new skirts have special molds dedicated to them.

A comparison photo of some of the different legs and skirts from LEGO. If you take a ruler and use the plate stack as a guide, you will appreciate how precise LEGO in designing new movable legs and skirts and making improvements to them.

Verdict

I give this set a 4.3/5.0 score as the set is only about 2 bikes racing. Designs are nice but it is only a set I would buy to complete the series. This set is priced at USD24.99 with a parts count of 203 pieces alongside with 3 Minifigures. The minifigures used in this set are mostly ‘exclusive’ to this wave.

Hope you enjoyed my review. This is Mr. Beast signing off. Thank you!
