BRICKHEADZ Minions : Rise of GRU 40420 and 40421

This set was originally planned for released in 2020. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the corresponding movie was pushed back a year and now pushed again to 2022. I think LEGO finally thought that they should sell the “merchandise” since it is ready and clogging up the inventory.

The two sets feature a 12 year old Gru and Belle Bottom, the leader of the supervillain group “The Vicious Six”. I’m kidding. The real stars of the sets MUST be the Minions themselves and we finally have Stuart, Otto, Bob and Kevin in official Brickheadz form.

BOX EXPERIENCE

Both sets some in blue boxes with the background being blueprints of Minions and LEGO. I’m pretty sure the art department had fun doing it and it adds a bit of character. The back of each box “reminds” you of the corresponding set to complete a “set”

Nothing too special with the sides of the boxes. The top shows off more of the blue blueprint background and the 1:1 items shown off are of one of the printed pieces in each set.

UNBOXING AND THE BUILD

We see a little departure from the regular Brickheadz builds here with the minions given “1×1 open O clips” as hands instead of the normal 1×1 or 1×2 with horizontal clip. This allows a little more flexibility as the hands can be rotated to allow some angles to hold accessories.

As usual, no stickers are found on Brickheadz and all the figures have at least one printed piece on them. They also gave Stuart his whisker hairs as a print! All minions also have a new Brickheadz eye print on round Light Bluish Grey 2×2 tiles  that give them the instant Minions look.

Belle Bottom is the most extravagant of them all with a lot of additional builds to account for her loud coat from the 70’s and her afro haircut while young Gru is given a 1×1 cheese slope to represent his distinctly strong nose in case we mistake him for some random guy with hair.

BUILDING TIPS AND PECULIAR THINGS

For veteran Brickheadz builders, the internals are always interesting where you’ll find some easter eggs dropped by the designers. For example, Homer Simpson has a pea sized brain and his belly has some of the donuts he ingested, Armando Salazar has transparent green innards and brain and a few others that slipped our mind. It is not forgotten here and we find that all Minions have pea sized brains, and even Otto has a small one although it could well have accommodated a 2×2 brick

Also, only Otto has a few tan Brick, Modified 1 x 2 x 1 2/3 with Studs on 1 Side while the others have exclusively Light Bluish Gray ones. We wonder why that’s the case?

SUMMARY

Although the stars are the MINIONS themselves, we were surprised by the Belle Bottom Brickheadz. Her fashion from the 70’s with the cool afro and loud outfit was translated very well by the designers. The introduction of the goggle eye prints for the Minions is spot on. We give these sets a solid 4/5 for bringing these iconic animation characters to brick.
