Review of 71737 X-1 Ninja Charger
“Red Batpod”
First of all, a big thank you to LEGO for sending us this awesome set for review. This set is a larger version of the previous 70727: X-1 Ninja Charger which was released back in 2015. Let’s see what’s inside this set.
The front of the box shows us the battle of the red charger fighting the Mindroids. Five minifigures are included in this set including the commemorative Limited Edition Golden Cole shown at the bottom right corner of the box as part of the 6 collect em all figures.
The back of the box shows us the playability of the set and the propelling manoeuvre to spring out the red bike hidden inside the car. The length of the car is around 23cm. This charger was featured in season 3 of the Ninjago animation show.
Stickers sheet. The bold red and yellow colours make me think, “Am I building a Ferrari?”
Bag 1 build. Here we have 3 minifigures with Kai’s red bike. The bike is actually an awesome build, it bears a small resemblance to Shotaro Kaneda’s Bike in the famous anime Akira?
Bag 2 build. The skeleton of the car was a combination of Technic pins and bricks. Here we have a spring part 731c04 Technic, Shock Absorber 6.5L – Hard Spring placed at the back of the car to propel the bike while opening the car lid like what we saw at the back of the box. Mindroid is also here here with a “light saber” axe.
Bag 3 build. Here we can see the full skeleton of the car. The yellow lever you see here, is the one that you press to lift off the lid and release the bike.
Bag 4 build. Here you can see we already have those skeletons covered up with snot pieces decorated by stickers on both side of the car. I like the fire stickers at the front of the car as it represents the fire element of Kai.
Bag 5 build. Jay is here in bag 5 and now the whole car is finished.
This is how it looks like when the car lid is opened up. I actually propped open in this position for the photo to show how it looks like when the bike is hidden inside the car or else it will normally fall back to its closed position right after motorbike leaves.
Minifigures
Golden Legacy Cole. He has thick eyebrows and comes with two facial expressions. Golden Ninja robe with dark grey inner outfit representing his Earth element. The new pauldron is not a sword holder but it comes with a clip to hold his hammer. It is sad that the voice actor of Cole Kirby Murrow passed away in November 2020.
Jay is the current Elemental Master and ninja of lightning. He comes with dual facial expressions . This Jay is the exact same minifigure with the one in 71735 Tournament of Elements, but with different coloured nunchuck chain.
Kai is currently the Elemental Master and Ninja of Fire, Nya’s brother, and Ray and Maya’s son. Red ninja with a scar on his right eye and a bandaid on his left forehead. This Kai is not a new Minifigure as it is the exact same one that appeared in 71735 Tournament of Elements, but with different weapon.
Nindroid warrior. He does look like Cyborg in DC Comics but I do love his ninja backpack. This backpack actually majes him unstable and couldn’t stand on his own feet unless you posed him at a very weird angle to get the correct balance of weight. He has two facial expressions, but they look similar with a small change in grimace and the droid part of the face swaps sides, as you can see in this picture.
Min-droid. He is the only Nindroid who does not have a voice, but instead, he communicates with electronic beeps, similar to droids in the Star Wars universe like R2-D2. He is shorter, utilizing the “kid” legs. Another Star Wars reference is that the thing that differentiates him from the Jedi/Sith is that he is able to hold the light sabre at the glowing end without burning his hand. Haha.
Here are all the minifigures in this set and the one that stood out was the Golden Legacy Cole. As mentioned, Kai and Jay are the same ones as Tournament of Elements. The two villains are similar looking, but the jetpack of the taller one is quite a fun build.
Verdict
I give this set a 4.0/5.0 score as the design of the car and bike is quite brilliant with the propelling play feature. This set is priced at $49.99 USD with 599 pieces and 5 minifigures. So to me, the main highlight of this set is the Golden Legacy Cole minifigure.
Hope you enjoyed my review. Thank you!
